When you add a domain name as hosted in some account, you typically set a pair of Name Servers to point it to that particular service provider. On their end, 3 records are created automatically the moment the domain is added - one A record and two MX records. The first one is a numeric address, or IP address, that “tells” the domain where its website is, while the other two are alphanumeric and they reveal the server that manages the emails for that specific domain. The website and the e-mail hosting are generally regarded as one thing, while they are actually two different services. Having separate records for them will enable you to have them with different providers if you would like. For instance, some new provider might have superb uptime for your site, but you may not want to switch your emails from your current host and by using an A record to point the Internet domain to the former and MX records to have the emails with the latter, you can get the best of both companies. These records are checked when you want to open a website or send an email - in any case, the company whose name servers are used for the domain address is going to be contacted to retrieve the A and MX records and if you've set records different from their own, the right web/mail server will then be contacted and you're going to see the needed site or your email will be delivered.

Custom MX and A Records in Shared Hosting

If you have a shared hosting account with our company and you would like to switch either your site or your emails to a different company, it will take you literally only two mouse clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you are going to be able to see and edit the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different e-mail provider and they ask you to create more MX records than the default two, it won't take more than a couple of clicks either to add them. You can also set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the bigger the priority a certain MX record is going to have. The propagation of each record that you change or create isn't going to take more than several hours and if necessary, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which indicates how long a record will remain active after it's modified or deleted.

You'll also be able to set different priority for the MX records which you create in case that you decide to use a third-party email provider and they ask you to create additional records aside from the two standard ones.
